Navy SEAL Josh Butner launches Campaign for Congress

Butner: “I am running for Congress to put people first, not personal profit and special interest politics”

Escondido, CA - Today, Lieutenant Commander USN SEAL (Retired) and current Jamul Dulzura Union School District Trustee Josh Butner announced his candidacy against Congressman Duncan Hunter – who is currently under criminal investigation by the Justice Department for misusing campaign funds -- in California’s 50th Congressional District.

“I am running for Congress to put people first, not personal profit and special interest politics,” said Josh Butner. “After spending my career as a Navy SEAL defending our nation, I can’t sit on the sidelines while entitled Washington politicians threaten the values that make us the greatest nation on earth. And as a father who raised my children in this community, I know that my neighbors aren’t looking for a handout, they’re just looking for a government that will work hard for hardworking people.”

Josh’s family has a long history of proudly serving our country in uniform. On his father’s side, their service extends all the way back to the Mexican-American War and, on his mother’s side, the Civil War. Josh Butner served for 23 years in the Navy where he saw many combat deployments, most recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. Josh first came to San Diego County in 1988 for training to become a Navy SEAL and currently lives on a small ranch in Jamul where he raised his children, one of which is currently serving in the military.

Josh was able to use the GI Bill while serving and he currently works in the private sector for a leading dive equipment company. Josh was inspired to continue serving his community as a public official when a local news station reported that there were not enough people running for his local school board. He ran and successfully won election to the Jamul Dulzura School Board in 2016.

“Trust is the only bridge that connects citizens to their elected representatives,” Butner continued.  “Unfortunately, Congressman Hunter’s actions have led to an ongoing criminal investigation and have destroyed that bond of trust. We must all live with the consequences of our actions, and Hunter’s actions have clarified that he can no longer serve our district effectively in Congress. We need change –now, more than ever.”

Use of his military rank, job titles, and photograph in uniform does not imply endorsement by the Department of the Navy or the Department of Defense.

Josh Butner is a retired Lieutenant Commander of the United States Navy SEALs and current Trustee on the Jamul Dulzura Union School District. Congressman Duncan Hunter is currently under investigation by the Department of Justice. The LA Times reported that Federal Officials has repeatedly raised questions about unusual spending by Duncan Hunter including flying his rabbit on a plane and payments to a nail salon, his children’s private school, and a Phoenix resort, among others. The Citizens for Responsible Ethics in Washington has characterized Rep. Hunter’s current situation as similar to disgraced former Rep. Aaron Shock who was indicted last year for fraud in excess of $100,000.
